November 21, 2024 Image James Holmberg ’93 is redefining the intersection of art, technology, and human connection with his 2021 exhibition, Absence. The innovative series featured twelve unique paintings on five large canvases, each painstakingly created, erased, and recreated to leave behind only faint traces of color—a process that explores themes of memory, presence, and loss. What sets Absence apart is its integration of cutting-edge technology. Holmberg and his team developed a companion app that allowed gallery visitors to interact with the canvases digitally. As attendees moved through the exhibit, the app used proximity-based technology to reveal the erased layers of the paintings on their devices, offering a deeper understanding of the artwork’s evolution.Holmberg’s work reflects his dual role in the art world and the growing field of AI. Outside of his artistic practice, Holmberg works full-time in AI education and strategy, guiding organizations in healthcare, education, and government to use AI tools creatively and human-centered. He believes that AI, when used thoughtfully, can complement and enhance human creativity rather than replace it."My approach to AI is rooted in strategic thinking and creative problem-solving skills honed at MCAD," says Holmberg. "It’s up to us as creatives to drive AI forward thoughtfully, bringing our vision and purpose into every project."Learn MoreHolmberg’s Website (jamesholmberg.com) AbscenceV2 (youtube.com—May 15, 2024)
