Made up of over 100 works by 96 artists from 74 different indigenous nations, Indigenous Identities: Here, Now & Always goes down in art history as the largest exhibition of contemporary Native American art. Curated by one of the most prolific Native American artists and curators Jaune Quick-to-See Smith, it was her final and most ambitious project before her passing on January 24, 2025. A goal throughout her career was to boost Native American artists’ voices to the forefront of contemporary art, and this collection achieves so while also spanning generations, including both elder and younger artists.

As noted by the director of the Zimmerli Art Museum, Maura Reilley, Ph.D., “This project is wholly Indigenous-led—from curation and didactics to book and exhibition design—and is a critical reflection of the Zimmerli’s mission to open our institution to a multitude of artistic voices and to decolonize the museum.” The collection includes work ranging from beadwork and basket weaving to painting and installation, challenging the idea that traditional craft-making is a concept of the past, and instead has a place in the modern contemporary art scene.
