May Ling Kopecky ’22, MFA, has been spotlighted by the Mayo Clinic News Network for her powerful use of art and music in raising awareness about multiple sclerosis (MS).

Kopecky was diagnosed with MS as a teenager, a condition that attacks the nervous system and can cause a range of debilitating symptoms. Through her paintings, including depictions of her own MRI scans, and her music, she opens a window into the invisible challenges of living with MS.

Kopecky, who plays over a dozen instruments, describes how creating art and music provides a way to process and communicate the complexities of her condition, from brain fog to physical limitations. “When I’m playing music, I feel like I’m able to just let myself express these things without really thinking too hard about it,” Kopecky explains.

Kopecky exhibits her art both regionally and nationally, using her pieces to spark conversation around chronic illness and inspire others facing similar challenges.
