February 15, 2025 Image The Minnesota Historical Society has acquired a goalie mask designed by Mdewakanton Dakota artist Cole Redhorse Taylor ’17, worn by Minnesota Wild goaltender Marc-André Fleury during Native American Heritage Night in 2023. The mask, valued at $35,100, was purchased in a silent auction by the Historical Society, where it now serves as part of the Our Home: Native Minnesota exhibit. The mask features a striking design inspired by Dakota floral patterns. It includes the phrase Mni Sóta Makoce—the Dakota name for Minnesota, translating to “the land of the misty waters.”“This mask is at the intersection of contemporary Native arts, sports memorabilia, and current discourses on the tension between sports and politics,” said Angelica Maier, the curator of 3-D objects at the Minnesota Historical Society. “Bringing the mask into the MNHS collections will further our ongoing effort to bring forward, tell, and preserve Minnesota’s stories.”Learn MoreGoalie mask designed by Dakota artist and worn by Wild’s Marc-André Fleury acquired by MN Historical Society (twincities.com—January 30, 2025) Explore more about Cole Redhorse Taylor
