Magner was born in Nicollet in 1872 and, from an early age, showed a talent for art. After high school, she went on to study at the Minneapolis School of Fine Arts, now known as the Minneapolis College of Art and Design. In 1901, she left home to study portraiture under Robert Henri and landscape painting under Douglas Connah at The New York School of Art in New York City. Her talent was quickly recognized, and she won several awards, which allowed her to travel around the world to further her knowledge of art.
