Portrait of Richard Slade

Dear MCAD Community,

It is with profound regret that I am sharing the news that MCAD's 13th President, G. Richard (Dick) Slade, passed away on Sunday, April 30, 2022. With a passion for the arts, education, and connecting with the community, Dick was instrumental in laying the foundation for the MCAD of today.

After leaving the banking business, Dick led MCAD from 1982 to 1990 with a desire to develop meaningful relationships, creative solutions, and financial stability for the college. Under the skillful navigation and leadership of President Slade, MCAD and Minneapolis Institute of Arts (Mia) separated to become autonomous organizations after more than one hundred years of shared history. Many thought MCAD would not survive, but because of his vision and care, MCAD continues to thrive today.

Dick’s family has generously established the G. Richard Slade Scholarship Fund at MCAD in his honor because of his love for MCAD. A memorial service will occur on Saturday, June 4 at 11:00 a.m. at St. John the Evangelist Church in Saint Paul. Please see the full obituary.

The more I hear about Dick’s work, personality, and goodwill, the more I wish I had a chance to know him. As MCAD's 19th President, I am grateful for those leaders like Dick who came before me.

All my best,
Sanjit
