What surprised you the most about the Pre-College Summer Session?

I was surprised by how academic it was; it wasn’t like going to a sleepaway camp. It was a little slice of college life. It’s because of this that I found myself working all day and often into the night, but I also became very dedicated to the work I was producing. I was more focused on art than I had ever been on anything else; it felt amazing to be so immersed in something I loved.

What aspect of the program had the biggest impact on you?

Being surrounded by so many other artists had the biggest impact on me. I could ask anyone for their opinion on a piece or for advice about how to continue and they would all have informed, creative answers. We were all there for similar reasons and we all had a shared passion. The conversations I had at MCAD about art, creativity, and dedication made me think about my own practice differently, they made me grow as a person and a creator.

How has your artistic practice changed from being a part of the program?

My art during MCAD was distinctly different from my art before, MCAD helped me merge my past practice with new techniques and mediums. I was given access to materials I had never used before, some I'd never even heard of! MCAD also changed how I thought about making art, I thought about how shape, color and composition can send a message, how to put a meaning and a story into my art. The pieces I made still felt like me and my style, they were just elevated and informed.

What was your favorite experience outside of the classroom?

I loved just being around the friends I was making. I clicked with my roommate instantly and we made many other friends within our classes as well as people from other majors. We were all kids figuring out how to live somewhat independently for the first time, and having a lot of fun doing it. Everyone was sharing spaces and experiences so we all got to know each other. Field trips, night activities, even just meals were the most fun because everyone was together.

What advice would you give to someone who is thinking about coming to the Pre-College Summer Session at MCAD?

I would tell them to be prepared to be in classes a lot, I think this is a program best targeted at people who want to continue on to art college, it’s for people who work well under direction, critique, and deadlines. I didn’t find it too demanding, but it was intense at times. That being said, however, I’d also say this program is meant to help you grow, you're not supposed to come out of it making the exact same art as you did before. Keep an open mind and come with the intention to learn and change.
