September 13, 2021 Alumni couple Sam and Kiley Busko are featured in the Watercolors and Wood exhibition at Legacy Hall on M State’s Fergus Falls campus. Kiley hopes to capture the unique personalities of birds through her expressive watercolor paintings. She is inspired by the beauty and freedom of birds and the water-based materials with which she works. Her work is controlled and detailed, yet intuitive and gestural. Quick bold brushstrokes combined with large fluid washes create a sense of movement and time. Their furniture collaborations are inspired by Scandinavian design, focusing on minimal forms and natural materials. “As furniture designers and makers, it is our goal to create elegant and modern furniture based on function and ease of use,” Sam said. “Despite keeping forms minimal, we allow the joinery techniques and the beauty of the materials to act as ornamentation.” Together, the couple creates Freeze Design Build, a furniture brand, locating in NE Minneapolis. Kiley and Sam came to the Minneapolis College of Art and Design for illustration and painting. After taking their first 3D class they both decided to go for a Furniture Design degree. It was in the woodshop that they met and have been building together ever since.
