April 24, 2023 Image Sara Suppan Sara Suppan ’15 will be presenting her first solo exhibition at the Micki Meng gallery in San Francisco's historic Chinatown district. Sweet Potato focuses on sincere attention to commonplace absurdities. The paintings create a tension between formal and casual picture-making and picture-taking, with scenes that feel like they were spontaneously captured on a phone camera. Such scenes take unexpected twists in the vein of a joke's punchline, including a plastic horse riding the rim of a crystal wine glass, a pair of shoelaces knotted together, a cat's rear-end protruding out of a ornate couch, and sun catchers decorating a sun-less sky. The exhibit finds joy in boredom and delight in simple pleasures, encouraging the audience to notice small miracles to pop up when they look for them, and to defuse the strictness of chore and routine. Treating the mundane with jest and veracity, Suppan takes the little, overlooked things in life and permeates them with warmth, significance, and sentimentality.
