April 05, 2023 Image Katherine Turczan Faculty member Katherine Turczan has just published a book delving into their Ukraine roots. From Where They Came revolves around Turczan rediscovering her Ukrainian family heritage. Her grandfather fought against the Bolsheviks in the Russian Civil War, subsequently fleeing due to the formation of the Soviet Union. In the summer of 1991, against the backdrop of the August coup and the subsequent independence of Ukraine, Katherine, fearing that her roots were disintegrating after the death of her grandfather and her parents' dementia, took a camera to the newly liberated country (hence the book's title) and rediscovered aunts, uncles, and cousins she had only heard of. The book consists of 8 x 10 portraits of her extended Ukrainian family's life.
