April 05, 2024 Image Katherine Turczan MCAD faculty member Katherine Turczan is currently presenting an exhibition of her project From Where They Came at the University of Minnesota's Tweed Museum of Art in Duluth. The photo series revolves around Turczan's family history, and paints a picture of Ukraine's painful transition from communism to capitalism after the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991. The series debuted at the Minneapolis Institute of Art (Mia) as part of the Minnesota Artists Exhibition Program in March 2022, one month after Russia's full-scale invasion of the country. Since then, it became printed as a book in April 2023, with Turczan being interviewed by The Guardian shortly afterwards. "I think there are different things that photography can do," Turczan said to The Guardian. "My images are essentially a reflection of my own complex family history as well as my relationship to a country that, before I went there, was based on received information – so much so that, when I did go there for the first time, I felt like I was returning."
