Violent Order, Lawful Crime

Jacob Yeates ’17, MFA, will be showing in the solo exhibition Violent Order, Lawful Harm at Squirrel Haus Arts.

This public exhibition will be displaying framed excerpts from the first draft of a recently-executed chapter from Violent Order, Lawful Harm, an in-progress graphic novel written and illustrated by Jacob Yeates, funded by a 2020 Minnesota State Arts Board Artist Initiative Grant, focusing on histories of U.S. policing systems. The completed chapter on display specifically focuses on law enforcement roles in political suppression within the U.S.

Reception will also feature additional resources and pop ups from Minneapolis collectives Boneshaker Books, Communities United Against Police Brutality, MPD150, and The People's Library.

Yeates is an artist-educator who has been living in south Minneapolis since moving from Iowa in 2015, and teaching undergraduate studio art courses since 2017. By incorporating modes of visual storytelling in the traditions of drawing, printmaking and narrative illustration with research, found documents, and personal writing, Yeates’s work looks to introduce viewers to particular, historical facets present within the United States’ legacies of state-sponsored violence, ultimately in the hopes of assisting in whatever greater steps can be taken—individually and collectively—towards reflection, accountability, and redress. Yeates is a fiscal year 2020 recipient of an Artist Initiative grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board. This activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the Arts and Cultural Heritage fund.
