Design the Future with the Fundamentals of Sustainable Design

Fundamentals of Sustainability

Sustainability impacts many aspects of our work and our lives today. While, as a society, we are addressing some of these issues, we increasingly need more creative and innovative solutions to reinvent our world. Designers and creative thinkers play an important role to play in determining what the future will be. Develop the skills you need to meet this challenge head on through the Fundamentals of Sustainable Design, a foundational course in our Master of Arts in Sustainable Design degree program. This course is also open to MCAD’s continuing education students.

Course Details
Explore the core ideas of sustainability and learn how these apply to design for sustainability (DfS). You will discover concepts and strategies that are relevant and applicable to real-world situations encountered in creative and innovation work of all types today. Gain an introduction to how these concepts developed, how to relate them to business objectives, what the core DfS strategies and models are, how to evaluate objects and designs through principles such as lifecycles and material health, and how to visually communicate about sustainability more effectively. You will explore ideas through lectures, readings, and discussions and understand how to apply DfS practice models through individual projects and exercises.
