Fri, Oct 3, 2014, 5 pm –Sun, Nov 9, 2014, 5 pm Main Gallery Gallery Exhibition Image The Minneapolis College of Art and Design and the Jerome Foundation are pleased to present an exhibition of new work by recipients of the 2013/14 Jerome Foundation Fellowships for Emerging Artists: Kjellgren Alkire, Pao Her, GraceMarie Keaton, Robin Schwartzman, and Nate Young. INFO SESSION ABOUT THE ARTISTS AND EXHIBITION Kjellgren Alkire’s ongoing exploration of rural culture, belief systems, and various power-seeking male personae will coalesce in a humorous, multi-faceted, towering installation designed to take advantage of MCAD Gallery’s 26-foot-high ceilings. Pao Houa Her will be presenting a photography series titled “Loving you is like wanting to die.” An amalgam of a variety of genres and formats, “Loving you is like wanting to die” is a photographic poem about the artist’s love/hate relationship with men, the Hmong community, and herself. GraceMarie Keaton’s most recent photographic work challenges the notion of the still life as a representation of a fixed moment. Moving between very traditional modes of image capture and manipulation to more improvised forms, her experimental production techniques result in objects that are sites of multiple simultaneous projections. Robin Schwartzman’s interest in roadside attractions has led her to examine these kitschy relics through a more candid lens. Three new ambitious sculptures will deconstruct the spectacular and explore the unreal. Nate Young’s newest multimedia installation plumbs the complexity of language, paying particular attention to its power to co-opt bodies and minds and its malleability in different cultural contexts.
