In this three-day workshop focused on K-12 and college level art education, experience three different topics, mediums, and studio spaces to gain inspiration for classroom teaching. Course descriptionStarting in MCAD’s state of the art 3D shop and digital production lab, see the latest technology in 3D printing, laser scanning, laser cutting and CNC machining as it applies to student artwork. Utilizing laser scanners and contemporary 3D modeling software, create small scale sculptures. Emphasis is on modifying, compositing and manipulating objects to generate sculptures that bridge the digital and physical. Gain an introduction of professional grade software and hardware, as well as cell phone scanning apps and open source modeling software. Participant projects will be available for pick up at the end of the three-day session. On day two, experience MCAD’s expansive printshop, one of the best in the midwest, and take part in a screenprinting workshop using hand-cut paper stencils. This is an accessible low-tech process that’s fast, direct, and a great introduction to color separation. It can easily be implemented in a classroom setting with access to basic screenprinting supplies. Learn fundamental screenprinting techniques and create a one or two-layer print on paper. Finally, end with a focus on character and concept design. Character and concept design encompasses a variety of drawing and illustration approaches that are applied in specific service to larger storytelling projects. Learn how coursework can engage and lead students in the creation of a visual overview of their own story concept, which can then be used in the production of a comic, video game, animation, or film. Fundamental techniques are introduced that allow for early exploration and iteration of concepts in search of design solutions. Study established designs and approaches for a survey of successful character functionality, regardless of stylistic choices. Working from narrative examples, learn how students can develop visual media assets and artwork like character, object, and environment designs, as well as storyboards and style frames. This workshop provides inspiration and an opportunity to discuss with other educators how to bring these topics into the classroom through hands-on project ideas. / This class has a one-hour lunch break each day. / Material fee of $12 is included in tuition./ We strongly encourage you to contact us and confirm your workshop has met minimum enrollment to run before making any travel arrangements.Open to students ages 18 and above.
