Digital Comic Art (online)

Digital Comic Art is a course exploring the skills and foundational knowledge to create fully digital comics. Ages 16+

Gain a working knowledge of crafting and producing comics using digital drawing programs, specifically Adobe Photoshop. Students learn digital skills and work on developing their creative voices. Weekly readings, technical demonstrations, and critiques of smaller assignments supplement the completion of a short-form comic over the five weeks. Topics covered include digital production, digital drawing techniques, effective stories, and character designs, color theory, and a study of modern cartoonists’ digital work and methods. / Students will have access to the Adobe Creative Suite throughout the course.

Class meeting details

This online course is a combination of synchronous and asynchronous sessions. The course is project-based, with 2 to 3 deadlines per week. This course includes a weekly synchronous meeting using Zoom on Wednesdays from 7:00–8:00 p.m. CST for discussions, feedback and opportunities for students to ask questions and share resources. Asynchronous course activities may include readings, video demonstrations and tutorials, online discussions, projects, and critiques.

Prerequisites

Previous drawing experience or experience in making comics is required. Previous experience with Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator is helpful, but not required. Example skills include drawing with basic tools like a brush and eraser and using layers.

Supplies
Pen or pencil; notebook or sketchbook;

Software
Adobe Creative Cloud (provided by MCAD).

Hardware
A computer capable of running Adobe Creative Cloud software, with internet access, and a camera or scanner to capture and upload work, and a drawing tablet.

This class uses the Adobe Creative Cloud and Canvas, MCAD’s learning management system. Please see links for more information.
