Learn the foundations of metalworking and welding. This class focuses on transforming ideas, drawings, and designs into three dimensional metal objects. Explore the basics of metal forming and welding by utilizing a project-based approach. The instructor leads demonstrations of techniques spanning several processes, culminating in a final student-driven project. This class utilizes project-based work time to apply instructed techniques and encouragement in exploration and experimentation in metalworking. Aluminum and bronze are not covered in this class. / No class June 17 and 19. / Facility fee of $50 in addition to the course tuition. Open to students ages 18 and above. Students do not have access to the 3D Shop outside of class hours, Monday/Wednesdays, 6:00–9:00 p.m. Prerequisites Previous drawing experience is helpful, but not required. Required materials Supplies required on the first day pen or pencil notebook or sketchbook safety glasses sharpie fire-rated work gloves tape measure Additional supplies needed throughout the course steel (mild weldable steel) no stainless, aluminum or bronze in this course drill bits for metal hammer wire cutter, or needle nose pliers grinding disks paint / materials for finishing Additional supplies will be discussed at the first class meeting. Students should expect to spend approximately $120 on supplies. What to wear Close-toed shoes are required. Clothes appropriate for messy creativity. Long pants that are 100% cotton or wool. Long hair should be tied back. Class resources This class uses Canvas, MCAD’s learning management system and Papercut, MCAD’s printing management system. Please see links for more information.
