Introduction to Relief Printmaking (in person)

Learn traditional, experimental and alternate relief printmaking techniques in a fun and rewarding course for beginners as well as for experienced printmakers looking to refresh their skills or build a portfolio.

Course description

Relief printmaking is a reductive process in which the printing surface is cut away leaving behind a raised surface for printing. The course includes demos and discussion throughout the class, as well as time to explore and learn independently. The instructor provides support and guidance throughout and will address topics including making multiple editions; paper selection, curating prints, and color mixing. The class offers instruction in both wood and linoleum and an opportunity to learn about the showcard press to experiment with text using MCAD’s type library. / Materials fee of $29 and facilities fee of $156 included in tuition. Open to students ages 18 and above. Review complete policies, including class cancellation policies, before completing your registration.

Class meeting details

This class meets in person on MCAD’s campus. This class has limited access to the Printshop. Students do not have access to the Printshop outside of class hours. Please review the Printshop guidelines in advance.

It is imperative to attend the first class meeting. Important instruction and safety procedures are covered, that are required in order to successfully participate in the class.

Prerequisites

Previous drawing experience is helpful, but not required.

Required materials

Supplies for the first class

  • Pencil and pen
  • Notebook or sketchbook
  • One mounted linoleum block (gold colored only), between 4x6" and 8x10"
  • Two 220 grit or finer sandpaper sheets
  • Two sheets carbon paper or graphite transfer paper
  • Sharpie pens: one fine point, one regular felt tip
  • Utility knife (ie: box cutter)

Additional supplies will be discussed at the first class.

Optional Supplies

  • Wood block or lino block carving tools. (Speedball Linoleum Cutter will be provided)
  • Apron

Students should expect to spend up to $75-$100 on supplies in addition to tuition.

What to wear
Clothes appropriate for messy creativity. Closed toed shoes are required. Long hair should be tied back.

Class savings

Register on or before January 20 and save $25.
Register for more than one class at a time and receive $25 off each additional class (same-day registrations only).
