Make and use handmade books to cultivate a regular creative practice. Create two soft-cover book structures that lend themselves to generative writing, drawing, and mixed media. Course descriptionLearn the affordances and constraints of the book as a format, exploring it as a tool that is iterative, sequential, and material. Discover how blank books have been used throughout history, including commonplace books, scrapbooks, and sketch books. Learn multi-section book binding techniques, including tools, material, process and finishing steps. The newly created books are used to promote a regular creative practice by creating imagery through drawing, collage, xerox transfer and writing prompts. Experiment with drawing and sketching within the space of the book, while considering line, color, pattern, scale, maps, grids, spreads, and sequencing. In addition to drawing and writing prompts in class, more prompts are shared for students who wish to explore a creative practice between class sessions. / Material fee of $29 included in tuition.
