Painting Fundamentals for ages 12-15 (June Session) (in person)

Course description

Students are introduced to the formal elements of painting, such as composition, measuring, and color theory. In addition to studio work, students learn about various painting styles and histories through short lectures and a visit to the Minneapolis Institute of Art. Students are introduced to terms commonly used to discuss art and experience a group critique. / The June and July sessions of this course are the same curriculum, choose the session that best fits your schedule. / The previous title of this course was Introduction to Painting. / Material fee of $5 included in course tuition. / This class meets Mondays and Wednesdays for a total of 5 sessions.

Open to students ages 12–15. Students must meet the age requirement by August 1, 2025. Please review our complete Teen Policies as well as our General Policies prior to completing your registration.

Prerequisites

Previous drawing experience is helpful, but not required.

Required materials

Supplies for the first class

• Pen or pencil
• Sketchbook
• 2 large sheets (22”x30” or larger) Arches Cover White and/or Rives BFK paper
• 2B graphite pencil
• Kneadable eraser
• Water cup
• Paper palettes
• Palette knife
• Acrylic paint brushes (various sizes, round and flat)
• Acrylic Paint Colors (at least 60 mL each)

  • Alizarin Crimson
  • Ultramarine Blue
  • Phthalo Blue
  • Yellow Ochre
  • Lemon Yellow
  • Burnt Sienna
  • Burnt Umber
  • Titanium White
  • Ivory Black

Students should anticipate an additional cost of roughly $100-$125 in total for materials (not included in tuition).

What to wear
Clothes appropriate for messy creativity.
