Painting with Gouache: Learning the Medium Intensive (in person)

Learn the basics of painting with gouache, a versatile opaque water based medium.

Gouache shares characteristics of watercolor, oil and acrylic paints, is highly pigmented, reworkable and dries quickly. The course includes demonstrations of fundamental techniques of working with gouache. While working with gouache, students learn traditional and non-traditional approaches to color theory, planar analysis, tessellation pattern, hand-painted illustration, still life, portraiture, and abstraction. Through an exploration of the medium of gouache and experimentation with a variety of styles and techniques, discover the richness of adding gouache to an artistic practice. Class time is spent on demonstrations, lectures, studio time, and critique. / Materials fee of $21 included in course tuition.

Open to students ages 18 and above. Review complete policies, including class cancellation policies, before completing your registration.

Prerequisites

Previous drawing and painting experience are helpful, but not required.

Required materials

Supplies for the first class

  • Pen or pencil
  • Notebook or sketchbook
  • Gouache paint set (tubes or pans) MCAD Art Cellar sells Holbein Artist & Designer Gouache & Niji Artist Gouache
  • Container for water
  • Watercolor paint brush round (Number 4 round and other sizes)
  • Watercolor paint brush flat brush
  • Watercolor paper (22 x 30" 140lb)
  • Paper (an assortment of different size, texture, & color paper)
  • HB pencils
  • Erasers (kneadable and/or pink pearl)
  • Paper towels
  • Masking tape
  • Pallet to mix colors on (plastic or disposable wax pallets)

Supplies will cost approximately $100–200 in addition to course tuition, depending on projects.

  • Xacto knife
  • Ruler or straightedge
  • Color pencils
