Painting Your World: Creative Exploration for ages 12-15 (in person)

In this class, students explore the world around them, through hobbies, interests, and everyday experiences, to create paintings that tell stories. Open to ages 12-15.

Course description

Focusing on personal meaning, delve into how favorite objects, interests, relationships with friends and family, and cultural heritage shape a sense of place. Throughout the course, develop artistic skills, learn key techniques in composition, brushstrokes, and color theory. Draw inspiration from both historical and contemporary artists who incorporate and include their culture and environment into their work. This class emphasizes the process of creating, with each student making intentional choices to express their personal perspective through painting. / Material fee of $5 included in course tuition.

Open to students ages 12-15. Students must meet the age requirement by August 1, 2025. Please review our complete Teen Policies as well as our General Policies prior to completing your registration.

Prerequisites

Previous drawing or painting experience is helpful, but not required.

Required materials

Supplies for the first class

  • Pen or pencil
  • Sketchbook
  • 2 large sheets (22”x30” or larger) Arches Cover White and/or Rives BFK paper
  • 2B graphite pencil
  • Kneadable eraser
  • Water cup
  • Paper palettes
  • Palette knife
  • Acrylic paint brushes (various sizes, round and flat)
  • Acrylic Paint Colors (at least 60 mL each):
    • Napthol Red
    • Alizarin Crimson
    • Ultramarine Blue
    • Phthalo Blue
    • Yellow Ochre
    • Lemon Yellow
    • Burnt Sienna
    • Burnt Umber
    • Titanium White
    • Ivory Black

Students should anticipate an additional cost of roughly $100-$125 in total for materials (not included in tuition).

What to wear
Clothes appropriate for messy creativity.
