This workshop provides an introduction to multiple and varied ways to approach the portrait. Course descriptionLearn how to achieve accuracy with regards to proportion, as well as a degree of "likeness," through a series of guided exercises which cover gesture, skeletal (skull) studies, and value observations. Learn the art history of portraiture and the methods artists use to capture the subject’s essence. This intensive workshop requires students to work independently between class meetings to complete projects and assignments, watch recorded lectures and participate in online discussions.Open to students ages 16 and above. Review complete policies, including class cancellation policies, before completing your registration.Class meeting detailsThis online course is a combination of synchronous and asynchronous sessions. Students meet together online for synchronous class meetings on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7:00-9:00 p.m. CST, using Google Meet for demonstrations, discussions, opportunities for students to ask questions. Asynchronous activities may include readings, pre-recorded art history videos, online discussions, projects, and critiques. The Instructor will share recorded feedback after each class and will offer office hours throughout the course. The class meetings are recorded for students to use as a review.PrerequisitesPrevious drawing experience is helpful, but not required.Required materialsSupplies required for first classPen or pencil Notebook or sketchbook 11” x 14” drawing paper pad 6B soft charcoal pencil 2 boxes extra soft vine charcoal (not willow) drawing pencils (HB, 3B, 6B) pen eraser kneaded eraser Students should expect to spend approximately $50 on supplies in addition to tuition.
