Printmaking and the Figure (in person) | Minneapolis College of Art and Design

Printmaking and the Figure (in person)

Gain both observational drawing and relief printmaking skills and techniques through a unique approach to printmaking. Carve an image of a figure in a carving block and learn to transform the image into multiple prints.

Observe a live model and create an image using relief carving tools on lino or wood blocks. Students are encouraged to carve directly from observation, rather than sketching on the blocks with pencil or charcoal. The first class session takes place in the drawing studio with a live model. Learn basic carving techniques and practice drawing the figure with carving tools on smaller blocks as a warm up. The remaining time allows for more in depth carving while observing the model in one or two longer poses.

The second class session takes place in MCAD's printmaking studio to learn basic relief printing techniques and create multiple prints using the carved relief blocks created in the first class session. The block and a printing press are used to produce beautiful black and white prints. Students are encouraged to share prints with other students for a print exchange at the end of the session.

The class is an intriguing challenge for printmakers, people who draw, and any artist who wants to try something new and different. / Materials fee of $38 and facilities fee of $17 included in tuition. Please review the Printshop Facility Fees Supply List for more information.

Open to students ages 18 and above. Review complete policies, including class cancellation policies, before completing your registration.
