Last week, Minneapolis became the 2017 home of the inaugural AIGA Eye on Design Conference and the annual AIGA National Design Conference. Both conferences are hosted by AIGA, the professional association for design. MCAD MFA 2nd year illustrator Alanna Stapleton '18 attended the one-day Eye on Design Conference. Throughout the day, attendees engaged in conversations about creativity and mental health, how to build strong client relationships and get paid, and crowdfunding for creatives. Speakers included illustrators Jon Burgerman, Ping Zhu, Julia Rothman, and Wendy McNaughton; illustrator and data editor at The Guardian, Mona Chalabi; filmmaker Gary Hustwit, and more. The annual National Design Conference took place over the next three days, exploring the theme of connectivity; with our work, with others, and the transformations connectivity can cause. MCAD MFA 2nd year Print Paper Book student María José Castillo '18, and 2nd year graphic designer Sherry Muyuan He '18, attended this three day conference. Presentations included: conversations with vocal artist and comedian Reggie Watts about creativity and improvisation; Annie Atkins on designing for films such as Wes Anderson's The Grand Budapest Hotel; Command X, a live design competition for seven emerging designers from around the nation; and much more.
