On Saturday, July 21st, the MCAD Gallery hosted an afternoon of community-centered events. In conjunction with the Foodways show, on view in the MCAD Gallery until August 12th, the community day was a celebration of food traditions in the Twin Cities. Organized by Director of Gallery and Exhibition Programs Kerry Morgan and MFA alum Zoe Cinel '18, the day included a honey and tea-tasting with the Tea Man, a Bake-On Contest juried by Amy Thielen, author of "Give a Girl a Knife" and "The New Midwestern Table" and a Pop-up Card Workshop hosted by MFA alum Sherry Muyuan He '18. Muyuan He's workshop, titled Spam Mail Pop-Up Card, showed participants how to create a pop-up book using the uncommon pull-tab technique. From the artist, "the end product is a mail-shaped card. When the arrow is pulled down, a spam meat can pops out. Besides regular and less-sodium spam, a variety of flavors were served including bacon, tocino, jalapeño, Portuguese sausage, chorizo, hickory smoke, teriyaki, turkey, cheese, and black pepper." The Foodways group show looks at the ways in which "contemporary Minnesota-based artists use the subject of food to reveal patterns of consumption, processes of acculturation, and the power of memory." Contributing artists included current MFA student Hallie Bahn '19, MFA alum Julie Benda '16, Kayla Campbell '16, Sieng Lee '14, Alanna Stapleton '18, Joel Terry '17 and former MFA Mentor Luis Fitch.
