This July, Joe Sinness: the Flowers, opened at Mia as part of the Minnesota Artists Exhibition Program. Sinness, a 2005 MFA alum, juxtaposes portraits, portraits, still-lifes, theatrical sculptures, and cinematic panoramas as a way to display the performative aspect of sexual desire. Sinness previously exhibited in a group MAEP exhibition in 2010; was a 2013 recipient of the Artist Initiative Grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board; received a McKnight Artist Fellowship for Visual Arts in 2013/14; and attended the 2015 Fire Island Artist Residency. "For his MAEP exhibition, Sinness captures the beauty of communities traditionally viewed as aberrant. Drawing inspiration from vintage physique magazines, and iconic films like Cruising, starring Al Pacino, Sinness visualizes desire and pursues a vision of utopic queer spaces and characters—portraying his subjects as tender and worthy of desire."
