Alumni Highlight / Zoe Cinel at Choreographer's Evening 2018

This November, Walker Art Center hosted its 46th edition of Choreographers’ Evening. Among the choreographers selected for the showcase was MCAD MFA alum Zoe Cinel '18, who exhibited her piece You Are Here, performed by Kaya Lovestrand. Among the crew for the piece were MFA alums Preston Drum '13 and Sishirprithvi Bommakanti '18.

From the artist, "You Are Here is one’s virtual journey to home, where home is an unreachable space in memory. Borders — these imposed political constructs on land — are impactful and internalized. When crossing borders, migrants are forced to become vulnerable monitored bodies, performing identities that allow them the right of passage in their rite of passing through life in this contemporary world. They drag their memories of land and culture all along their journey with the hope to relive those memories in their reality. And You Are Here recreates that journey on stage."

This year, Choreographer's Evening was curated by the founder of Aniccha Arts, Pramila Vasudevan. From the Walker, "(Vasudevan) selected eleven works by choreographers taking new risks in dance and performance. “I feel the works make a personal connection and reflect the artists’ deeply embodied search,” Vasudevan says. “And in some works, a kind of transcience and queerness manifests. I’m interested in the idea of ‘not a thing.’ So there isn’t an overarching theme. I feel the artists and audiences should have the freedom and space to find their own through lines across the works. The evening offers a complexity of different artist voices.”
