Having lived much of her adult life in dorm rooms and small apartments, Binbin Shen decided to design residential and mass-produced furniture to solve problems for small-space living. Shen uses her optimism, humor, and experience in the creation of her work through a careful and playful combining of shapes, colors, and ideas. Influenced by Pop art furniture design of the 1960s and Memphis furniture of the 1980s, Shen creates furniture that not only provides the functional aspects for living, but also accommodates the playfulness and energetic lifestyles of young people stuck living in small spaces. Shen wants to give people an unexpected surprise when they see her furniture! Be sure to join us on Friday, May 11th from 6-9pm at the MFA Graduate Studios to enjoy Binbin's thesis work, along with the other 2018 graduates!
