Cassandra Cook is a visual artist who makes work that blends photography with other mediums ranging from painting to printmaking to video installation. She finds it interesting to create a relationship with mediums and to find a way for them to coexist. Her work allows her to experiment and explore different outcomes with traditional darkroom printing to digital printing on fabric. It has also let her explore her own personal narrative of growing up in a family where her father was in the military. It has also allowed her to question her practice in terms of themes involving displacement of place, journey, and destination as well as time as a common thread within her work. Moving around from place to place her whole life has left her feeling displaced at times. She calls many places her home, but not one of them carries more significant value over another. Each one of these places has expanded her knowledge of her community, absorbing its values, instead of being an outsider looking in. This at times has left her feeling displaced, yet she is always enriched by her observations. Be sure to join us on Friday, May 17th from 6pm-9pm at the MFA Graduate Studios to enjoy Cassandra's thesis work, along with the other 2019 graduates!
