Chelsea Reeck / 2017 Thesis Candidate

Chelsea Reeck was diagnosed with stage III Hodgkin's Lymphoma on April 13, 2016. A deep sense of powerlessness lead her to photograph her personal trauma through the documentation of spaces and objects as evidence of her illness. Her thesis work articulates the destructive effects of chemotherapy treatment and the parallel conflicts created by its current role as the immediate response to cancer diagnosis.

Reeck questions chemotherapy's place as a go-to method of treatment. Through photographic exploration, she documented spaces within the hospital as well as her home post-treatment, as a way to develop these questions in an artistic manner, and offer the viewer a first person perspective, generating an empathetic experience when considering this work.

Be sure to join us on Friday, May 12th from 6-9pm at the MFA Graduate Studios to enjoy Chelsea's thesis work, along with the other 2017 graduates!
