Erin Sandsmark / 2017 Thesis Candidate

Erin Sandsmark is a painter driven by the examination of how bodies like hers fit into our social norms and understandings of what it is to be a woman. Sandsmark uses her body openly to examine spaces where some find discomfort, continuing to understand the space she occupies in relation to others. She turns flesh into material, paint and canvas into body.

In her thesis work, Sandsmark examines our many facets and uses her body to understand the psychological connection between ourselves and our bodies. The picture plane occupies multiple figures– creating a space for transparency and abstraction. Dialogue occurs between these bodies, and in viewing the paintings one is asked to contemplate the multiplicities that make up each of us.

Be sure to join us on Friday, May 12th from 6-9pm at the MFA Graduate Studios to enjoy Erin's thesis work, along with the other 2017 graduates!
