Grace Olson / 2019 Thesis Candidate

Grace Olson is a photographer whose work is guided by memory, dealing with the complexities of family and concealed narratives. She utilises archival imagery, written word, and various methods of organisation to identify facets of personal history.

Through photography, she attempts to make sense of the traces of life as her work delves into questions surrounding familial experience. She finds herself intrigued by the paradoxes involved in how she might articulate these narratives without revealing them. Carrying the impulse to protect, she uses photography as a tool for suggestion and to garner meaning.

Her photographs highlight the intimate relationships that develop between the archival instinct and the medium of photography. Grace has a specific interest in writing and applying organisational structures, which can be revealing forces for memory. These actions allow her to have a feeling of control over the past, present, and future by reordering her environment.

Be sure to join us on Friday, May 17th from 6pm-9pm at the MFA Graduate Studios to enjoy Grace's thesis work, along with the other 2019 graduates!
