Highlights Foundation Workshop with Cailey Birchem ’22

This summer, Cailey Birchem ’22 participated in our first ever Launch Program with the Highlights Foundation by attending a two-week workshop, Deep Dive into Children’s Book Illustration.

The Highlights Foundation positively impacts children by amplifying the voices of storytellers who inform, educate, and inspire children to become their best selves. Birchem was one of five MCAD MFA artists who attended this newly funded Launch Program.

Please enjoy this short interview:

  1. What were some of your goals headed into the workshop?

I was hoping to best learn how people make the transition from general illustrator/side-gig/designer to children’s book illustrator. I was also really interested in learning what the process was the go from idea for plot, style choice, publishing, etc.

  2. What did your average day look like during the workshop?

We spent a lot of time sharing our work and getting feedback from the instructors in front of the class. The other half of the time we listened to presentations on what other children’s book illustrators’ processes are.

  3. What were your takeaways about your work, career, or practice?

It was made very clear that as a designer, I have to make the conscious choice to separate my practice into two sections if I want to be a successful illustrator. One portfolio/website for illustrating (particularly for children’s book) and one for graphic design. Essentially like two brands?

There was also a theme of just illustrating in the way that makes you happy rather than trying to match a style or a look. I took a lot out of that conversation.

  4. What would you say to a future Launch Program participant who is considering applying?

I’d say you don’t need to be a a professional illustrator to be in this program. You learn so much about the process of illustrating a book and a STORY, which can be applied to so many disciplines!
