As an editorial illustrator, Jessica Welhaf sees her work as directed, but also driven by her personal commentary about certain political, economic, and social concerns in America today. Welhaf's practice focuses on the intersectionality of local and global cultures and how they manifest in contemporary American society. Her process investigates where, how, when, and why these intersections occur through the lens of her personal experiences of these events in tandem with independent research in order to create a visual narrative. Welhaf sees her illustrations as a tool for communication that can educate and enhance the viewer’s experience. With her work, she strives to find a way in which she can use her illustrations to better articulate the voices and experiences of the people and communities it represents. Welhaf wants her work to be a foundation for a continuing narrative, to provoke dialogue, and possibly encourage political action. Be sure to join us on Friday, May 11th from 6-9pm at the MFA Graduate Studios to enjoy Jessica Welhaf's thesis work, along with the other 2018 graduates!
