Jonathan Aller's work deals with cultural hybridity and constructed identities within the Latin community. His fascination with naturalistic painting and portraiture is one of the major forces that inspires him to take this daunting path as a profession. Aller has always enjoyed the laborious quality of paintings and drawings that have the kind of depth that can overtake your senses. As a son of immigrants from South America and a first-generation American Latino, Aller is interested in how his own experiences within “American” culture compare to other Latin individuals. His painting not only brings together Latin figures but it also fuses various techniques that complement the individual’s ethnicity. Through lines, flat colors, graphic elements, and both traditional and contemporary techniques, Aller hopes the viewer gets a contemporary portraiture experience that echoes its history and speaks to the constructed nature of the sitter’s identity. Be sure to join us on Friday, May 11th from 6-9pm at the MFA Graduate Studios to enjoy Jonathan's thesis work, along with the other 2018 graduates!
