Julie Benda / 2016 Thesis Candidate

Julie Reneé Benda thinks of lakes, rocks, and trees as an original vocabulary—one that infuses her understanding of the world through story and experience. In her artwork, she uses her own and others’ narratives of place to promote and strengthen this communication.

The work builds upon her explorations of creating thoughtful environments and subtle interactions that act as catalysts for sensing connection with one another and place. Earth, dirt, water, seed, plant, animal, and landscape are her subjects, and their colors, sensations, and significance are all part of a dialog of rootedness and interconnection. Whether working in print, book, or installation, Julie prefers to engage the audience through small gestures that speak to the insight each element provides.

Be sure to join us on Friday, May 13th at our new MFA Graduate Studios to enjoy Julie's thesis work along with the other 2016 graduates.
