Kathryn: "Thinking of identity as a cultural, social, and psychological construct, I am interested in exploring the manipulation and materiality of identity representation in the narrower context of individual identity formation. Specifically exploring ‘whiteness,’ my work is rooted in the gaps between questions of ‘normalcy’ and the desire for belonging in the context of interpersonal relationships on racial terms. By pointing to my own cultural background of a caucasian woman raised in a small town in central Iowa, my work lies within the boundaries of my own difficulties in answering the question ‘who am I?’ Through the manipulation of mixed pigment, my paintings reflect my struggles, my yearnings, and my concerns about race of the lives of the people in my community where the seams of racial construction -- of cultural identity -- begin to unravel through my distorted representational imagery."
