SGMS, or Schoolgirls and Mobile Suits, is an internationally recognized conference that explores the global impact and innovations of pop culture, particularly related to Japanese anime and manga. Since its inception in 2001, SGMS has become a center for discussion of the cultural study, creation, aesthetics, sociology, fascination and wonder of the remarkably broad range of objects and practices that have developed around the global proliferation of Japanese manga and anime. It was also the birthplace of the now internationally praised Mechademia book series published by the University of Minnesota Press. Not just an ordinary academic conference, aside from the presentation of academic papers, SGMS also feature anime screenings, fan markets, and a full-blown fashion show (Dubbed 'Full Fashion Panic') that has became the trademark of the conference. This year's Full Fashion Panic coincides with the Minneapolis - St. Paul fashion week, bringing in an array of diverse audience to the show. After bringing in Cowboy's BeBop Dai Sato last year, this year's SGMS welcomed Hiroki Azuma - one of the most influential young literary critics currently active in Japan as its keynote speaker. Also featured as one of the panel speakers was Allison Bolah (Photography '14), presenting her paper on minority representation in popular television series.
