Mentor Highlight / Allegra Lockstadt for Starbucks

MCAD MFA mentor Allegra Lockstadt recently collaborated on murals and artwork for a Starbucks located on State and Lake Street in Madison, Wisconsin. Lockstadt and her collaborator, Minneapolis-based artist Ashley Mary, created a large mural on the ground floor, a stairwell mural, and a few paintings for the upstairs space inside the store.

Lockstadt says about the project:

"The Chicago-based Starbucks Design Team approached us with an idea of creating imagery that was inspired by flamingos and coffee. In Madison, the pink plastic flamingo is the official city bird. This official designation was made to pay homage to a college prank from the 1970s wherein students dotted the University of Wisconsin’s campus lawn with thousands of pink flamingos. And more relative to Starbucks, flamingos are native to parts of Ethiopia where Starbucks sources their coffee. Inspired by these parallel aspects, Ashley and I collaborated to create murals and paintings that celebrate both Madison and coffee culture."
