Sihai Zhu, a filmmaker from Yantai, China, focuses on telling stories deeply infused with an emotional sense of humanity and a "slice of life" perspective. For Zhu, the essence of the cinema lies in editing because of its instinctive nature. As an editor, Zhu views making the cut decision to be a creative artistic process which determines the film’s storytelling ability. Zhu's thesis project, Cornfield, is a narrative short film about an unfortunate young man who has mental disabilities and the miserable story happening to him, his step-brother and the brother’s wife. Zhu uses flashbacks to break the timeline and jarring cuts to fight scenes that greatly enhance the intense feeling of her film. Be sure to join us on Friday, May 12th from 6-9pm at the MFA Graduate Studios to enjoy Sihai's thesis work, along with the other 2017 graduates!
