This October, MCAD welcomed interdisciplinary artist Jefferson Pinder. He gave a visiting artist lecture on MCAD's main campus, and stopped by the MFA studios to spend time with MFA students in their studios. Pinder creates "performances, video work, and objects that challenge viewers to think critically about our highly polarized society." He explores the "tangle of representations, visual tropes, and mythes—referencing historical events and invoking cultural symbolism. " Placing no restrictions on the vast and varied tools that he employs, Pinder explores "ways in which reclaimed materials convey rugged histories relating them to an African-American experience." "His work has been featured in numerous group and solo shows including exhibitions at the Studio Museum in Harlem, New York; the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art in Hartford, Connecticut; Showroom Mama in Rotterdam, the Netherlands; the Phillips Collection; and the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, DC. At present, Pinder is exhibiting at the 2016 Shanghai Biennale, and at the new Smithsonian Museum of African American History and Culture. In 2016, Pinder was awarded a USA Joyce Fellowship Award in the field of performance and is a 2017 John S. Guggenheim Fellow for Fine Art." Pinder met with first year MFA painter Yuta Uchida, first year MFA photographers Grace Olson and Donna Meyer, and 2nd year MFA filmmaker Zoe Cinel. Thanks for visiting, Jefferson!
