Yuchen Zhang / 2018 Thesis Candidate

Yuchen Zhang makes surreal metaphoric comics and illustrations that can drag audiences out of their everyday reality and into a twisted world reflecting her own sense of experience and feelings.

As a comic artist and illustrator telling paranormal stories that show the conflict between the real world and fantasy world, Zhang hopes to express her indescribable, subjective feelings into a more concrete expression that gives a sense of Zhang's inner thoughts. Her aim is to create a fantasy for the viewer - to enable the viewer to take a break from their everyday lives, drag them out of their own mundane reality and into Zhang's twisted world.

Although she cannot always explain these fantasies, Zhang hopes to illustrate the ideas and concepts that are part of these weird narratives. She hopes her viewers can sense a similar sensation of waking dreams as she feels them!

Be sure to join us on Friday, May 11th from 6-9pm at the MFA Graduate Studios to enjoy Yuchen's thesis work, along with the other 2018 graduates!
