Yuta Uchida / 2019 Thesis Candidate

Yuta Uchida's work deals with the complexity and multiplicity of cultural identity. His primary medium is oil painting; however, throughout the process of making, he utilises various media, including drawing, sculpture, and digital collage, to spark his inspiration. The issue of cultural identity is broad and complex—therefore, his practice focuses on the transnational experiences of a foreigner or immigrant. Nevertheless, his work embraces ambiguity and ambivalence, so that it is open for any interpretations.

Yuta's thesis work is a large-scale painting that visualises the chaotic convergence of cultural influences. His cultural identity is always a “work-in-progress.” Thus, the painting functions as a snapshot of the process of his identity becoming something. Ambiguity and clarity reside together on the space pictorial. The layers of symbolism obscure the individual symbolism, merge, and eventually grow to have another significance. The chaotic juxtaposition expresses the energy of the transformative experience of his cultural identity.

Be sure to join us on Friday, May 17th from 6pm-9pm at the MFA Graduate Studios to enjoy Yuta's thesis work, along with the other 2019 graduates!
