Image Alumni ’16 Education BFA in Web and Multimedia Environments Current Career Engineer for Target Location Minneapolis, Minnesota Where are you originally from and how did you hear about MCAD? I'm originally from Minneapolis. I think MCAD first caught my eye at a career fair. I really liked the Viewbooks they were giving out of student and alumni work. What was your major and how did you choose it? Web and multimedia environments. I actually switched to this from graphic design my sophomore year because I really wanted to focus on making digital, interactive work. After talking to Piotr Szyhalski, I determined that WMM would give me more opportunities to make that kind of work. Who was your favorite teacher and why? Probably Ben Moren, but I had a really good experience with most of my teachers at MCAD, especially within the WMM program. Every class I had with Ben really allowed me to work how I work best. Assignments had clear goals and I work best when I know where the boundaries are so I can skirt the edges and try to make work that just barely fits within those bounds. Describe what you do for work and how you feel about it. I work with Target's Creative Marketing department to make interactive installations for events—mainly focusing on VR or networked games. How did you get your job? I learned the basic tools for making games at MCAD, and really expanded those skills in my free time, got involved in the local game development community, and ended up working on a game with someone who worked at Target, and when he heard through the grapevine that they needed someone with experience specifically in VR and games, he reached out to me and got me in the door! Your biggest takeaway from MCAD? Don't be shy to really lean into what you WANT to do and make it work with what you HAVE to do. I had a lot of fun merging my interactive work into my typography homework and I think it was pretty engaging and inspirational for the other designers in the class as well.
