Image Alumni ’22 Education BFA, Minneapolis College of Art and Design Website londonking.studio Social Media @londoncallingg Current Career Social Media Specialist and Photographer Location Minneapolis, Minnesota What was your major and how did you choose it? I received my BFA in Photography. My Higher Education journey began at the Borough of Manhattan Community College, where I earned my Associate's degree in Studio Art, focusing on photography. Photography has been my passion for over a decade, which naturally led me to specialize in it at MCAD. This decision was fueled by my long-standing interest and previous educational background in the field. Who was your favorite faculty member and why? My favorite faculty member at MCAD was Katherine Turczan. She had a profound impact on both my development and that of my peers. Katherine is an exceptional teacher, deeply caring about her students' growth and success. I always felt comfortable and engaged in her classes, especially during critiques. Her guidance and teaching style resonated with me, and I genuinely feel that I learned the most from her during my time at MCAD. Her influence has been a significant part of my educational journey. Describe your internship(s). My internship experience, thanks to Katherine Turczan's recommendation, was with renowned photographer Alec Soth and his studio manager, Ethan Jones. This opportunity extended beyond the internship period, allowing me to assist both Alec and Ethan in various capacities. I participated in a two-week road trip for a New York Times piece by Alec and even cast for an editorial photoshoot he did for Bottega Veneta. I remain in close contact with them, reaching out for advice or just to catch up. I'm incredibly grateful for Alec's support, including facilitating my own feature in the New York Times, and for his trust in me as an artist in the Twin Cities. Describe what you do for work and how your experience with it has been. As the social media specialist in charge of all of MCAD's social platforms, my role is a perfect blend of my passion for photography with social media and marketing. Utilizing the skills I honed while attending MCAD, I've embraced the challenge of stepping into a role I had no prior experience in. It's been an incredible journey, allowing me to creatively combine visual storytelling with strategic communication, which has not only been fulfilling but has also significantly contributed to my professional growth and the dynamic online presence of MCAD. How did you get your job? I started as a student photographer, and once I graduated, I was offered a full-time position as the Social Media Specialist. Best thing you ever found on the free shelf? iMac from 2012 What have you learned since graduating from MCAD? Since graduating from MCAD, I've learned that being an artist can be quite challenging. Post-graduation, I found it difficult to create work for myself without the inherent structure of school. I am, however, grateful that my current job requires me to think creatively. This keeps my artistic mind active, ensuring that when I do return to creating my own work, it won't feel completely foreign. This experience has taught me the importance of finding ways to continually engage and nurture creativity, even outside a formal educational setting. Is there anything you wish you knew when you were an MCAD student? As a transfer student and being slightly older than my peers, I approached my time at MCAD with an open mind and heart. I was very focused on excelling in my assignments and earning good grades. Looking back, I wish I had taken more advantage of the opportunities outside of the classroom. Participating in more student-run gallery shows, applying for grants, and submitting my work to art competitions would have enriched my experience further and provided valuable exposure. It's a reminder that while academic success is important, engaging in the broader artistic community is equally valuable for growth and opportunity. Your biggest takeaway from MCAD? My biggest takeaway from MCAD is realizing the immense value of the relationships formed both within and outside the classroom. The connections made with peers and faculty in the educational setting are crucial, but so are the relationships built within the broader Minneapolis community. The city offers abundant opportunities for young artists, and MCAD sits at the heart of this vibrant scene. The friends I made, the life experiences I gained, and the unique skills I acquired at MCAD are assets I wouldn't have developed on my own. This blend of academic and community engagement has been instrumental in my growth as an artist. What accomplishment are you most proud of? Photographing for The New York Times just six months after graduating from MCAD stands out as my most significant accomplishment. Additionally, being invited to participate in Public Functionary, a respected art venue, is another achievement I hold in high regard. These experiences not only validate my skills and passion for photography but also mark pivotal moments in my early career, offering exposure and recognition in highly esteemed platforms. If you could collaborate with any artist, living or dead, who would it be and why? I would choose Justine Kurland. Her work has always inspired me, and collaborating with her would be a dream opportunity. What advice do you have for current MCAD students and/or artists at the beginning of their creative careers? My advice for current MCAD students and emerging artists is to engage actively with the artist community. Speak with as many artists as you can and immerse yourself in the strong, supportive community around you. Make a point to visit various art galleries in town, be visible, and get noticed. Even if you feel unsure of your path, surrounding yourself with art and artists can propel your career significantly. This connection with the art world and its people can offer invaluable experiences and opportunities in your creative journey.
