Suyao Tian ‘17, MFA, is currently exhibiting her watercolors in Teetering on the Brink: Femininity, Inheritance, and Disaster.

Teetering on the Brink is a group exhibition featuring nearly thirty abstract and figurative paintings and sculptures on themes of childhood, memory, patriarchal values, and female identity. The exhibition is on view at the Claire Oliver Gallery in New York from March 15 –May 11, 2024.

Tian’s abstract watercolor paintings in the Teetering on the Brink are distorted, dreamlike landscapes rich in imaginative life. Growing up as a single child during the one-child-only policy in China, Tian formed connections to bugs in nature. Her work now reflects her interest in nature and bug life, featuring fragmented memories of childhood, the imagination, and the subconscious.
