By Isabel Gloss on October 04, 2019 MCAD is an exceptional place for students to take their creativity and passions outside of their classes and look for other people that share those interests. We have clubs for magic, horror movies (formally Zombie Appreciation Club), natural hair, ping pong, bees, and bikes. Students have the opportunity to create any club that they want and receive funding every semester from Student Affairs. One club that has been very active in the community and making themselves known is Latinxs Unidxs. Originally created by Mase Santos ’18 five years ago, it is now run by Lizbeth Rosas Real and Diane Guzman, both seniors and illustration majors. Latinxs Unidxs is an extremely active group, meeting every week and talking about their day, doing a monthly movie night, eating out at Latinx restaurants, and visiting Latinx communities and exhibits. Their club heavily relies on what the members want to do and making sure everyone is being heard. With Hispanic Heritage Month currently being celebrated, Latinxs Unidxs is very excited about what is happening in the Twin Cities. They will be visiting Electric Machete Studios, a highly acclaimed Latinx studio in St. Paul, and Jonathan Herrera Soto’s solo exhibition at Mia. This is a great opportunity to see not only an MCAD alum succeeding but a Latinx MCAD alum succeeding. Other field trip ideas they have in the works for this month include: Go eat at a Latinx restaurant LatinoLEAD Heritage Month Event: Celebrating our Latinidad! October 2, 2019, 5:30–7:30 p.m., Crown Roller Mill Building Gala Latina: Celebrating Latino Leadership and Culture October 11, 2019, 5:00–9:30 p.m., Minneapolis Hilton Hotel Artwork by Brianna Quintero Latinxs Unidxs was recently granted the Library Gallery Space for this fall for members to exhibit their work. It is their first gallery show that the club has ever done. The topic is Dream: A series of thoughts, images, and sensations occurring in a person's mind during sleep. Members are invited to submit artwork before October 11th. Rosas Real and Guzman say that the goal of Latinxs Unidxs is “to have a space for Latinxs at MCAD” and “to bring our everyday culture and experiences to the club and to share our stories.” Latinxs Unidxs meets every Friday at 6:30 p.m. in room 201 in the Main Building.
