It's Time to Put On Your Halloween Costumes!

Can you believe it’s already time for Halloween?

Growing up in a different country than the United States, I always found Halloween to be such an extraordinary event because of how spooktacular it can be! It’s the one day filled with horrifying joy for people to roam the street and transform the impossible into limitless possibilities.

Although Halloween is going to be different this year, the good news is there's nothing stopping anyone from dressing up! Halloween is like a fairy godmother— it gives people a chance to become whoever and whatever they want to be for one night and the costume is the final magic element.

Not sure what to dress up as this year? Worry not! I asked fellow MCAD students what their costume plans are for some inspiration...

There are many options for putting together costumes—retail stores, thrift stores, craft stores, local stores, and online shopping, for example. Many of our MCAD students, however, shared that they prefer to achieve their costumes from things they already have lying around and often make them from scratch. This allows for more creativity and adds that unique touch to costumes.

Despite the unprecedented state of things this Halloween, all students I spoke with shared that they will be dressing up! Some have already spent a whole month planning their costumes while others plan to put together some last-minute ideas with their friends, simply using what they already have.

Jovana Flores, who is a sophomore illustration major, shares: “This year I am dressing up as Padme from Star Wars along with my boyfriend who is dressing up as Anakin. I watched the movie with him and decided to go for it because the costume is not too complicated!” She will be preparing her costume by matching casual clothing together then alter them a bit to match the costume. On the other hand, McKennan Folkerts, a prospective furniture designer, says she will be putting together a last-minute costume by mixing and matching from her wardrobe. This is a perfect solution for busy students who still want to dress up.
Students dressed for Halloween

No matter the circumstances, Halloween is always a great time of year to be around friends (even if it’s virtually)! Last year was my first time dressing up for Halloween and it was extremely fun because my friends were dressing up as well. This year, my friends and I will be having a virtual movie night and we will choose a theme to dress up together!

Looking for some fun, physically-distanced activities for your Halloween? Try carving pumpkins with a few close friends, dressing your place with spooky decor then having a mini photoshoot (don't forget to hashtag #makemcad), or throw a movie night with your few friends (virtually or in-person)! You can also be showing off your wonderful costumes to the other fellow MCAD students by joining the Spooky Movie Night hosted by the Movie Club) and the Trivia Night/Costume Contest hosted by Student Affairs via Zoom.

It's hard to believe it's already the end of October. If the spooky gatekeeper of the holiday season is already here, then soon, the arrival of Thanksgiving and Christmas will sweep right by!
